the Organizing Committee of 8th CIMS Conference decided to postpone the Conference till the next year.

Conference Scope

The conference welcomes the submission of quality papers which make a good and significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding and to research advancement with regard to the stability aspects of metal and composite material structures. Particular emphasis is to be paid to the advances made in the analysis and design of structural systems which are associated with stability aspects involving more than one mode of buckling. Theoretical, numerical and experimental research related to the buckling of metal, notably steel, stainless steel and aluminium structures or metal-composite structures are central themes of the conference as are reliability based studies related to the design of coupled instability phenomena.

Invited Speakers

Ben Schafer

John Hopkins University , Baltimore, USA

Benjamin W. Schafer is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He is also active in engineering consulting and is currently a Consulting Principal at Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger in the Engineering Mechanics and Infrastructure Group. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Structural Engineering and his B.S.E. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa. Professor Schafer has led numerous research projects on the behavior and design of cold-formed steel structures and is the Director of the Cold-Formed Steel Research Consortium. He serves on the AISI and AISC specification committees which create the nation’s standards for cold-formed and hot-rolled steel structures, respectively. He is also Chair of the ASCE 8 standards committee on stainless cold-formed steel and Vice-Chair of the AISC 370 standards committee on stainless hot-rolled steel. He has previously served as Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins, Chair of the Structural Stability Research Council, President of the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute, and North American Editor of the Journal of Thin-walled Structures. He is an award winning teacher and avid proponent of the tenets of Structural Art, which he teaches about in his course Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures. He is a dedicated runner, youth soccer coach, and facilitator for a middle school maker program. He currently resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife and one child.

Nuno Silvestre

Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal

Nuno Silvestre is Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal. Since the 90’s, he has been an enthusiast on the study of buckling and nonlinear phenomena, either in steel or composite structures. At the turn of the century, while yet in civil engineering field, he developed generalised beam theory for composite materials, postbuckling behaviour and vibration analysis. Ten years later, he moved to mechanical enginering and shift part of his research interests to the analysis of nanostrutures, an amazing tiny world with big things to do. Nuno received many awards from national and international agencies for his achievements. He has been special referee of the European Research Council for Products and Process Engineering panel and an active member of Nanofutures Platform. He is currently vice-president of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and vice-president of the National Laboratory for Energy, Transportation, Aeronautics and Space. Since 2017, Nuno has been Editor of Thin-Walled Structures Journal and Associate Editor for other journals.

Kim Rasmussen

University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia

Dr Kim Rasmussen is full Professor and Chairman of the Centre for Advanced Structural Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney. He is also Deputy Dean and Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney. His main research interests are theoretical and experimental structural mechanics and structural stability analysis with particular application to steel structural members and systems, cold-formed steel structures, stainless steel structures and aluminium structures. His current research activities involve the testing, analysis and design of steel storage rack structures and built-up cold-formed steel structures, as well as the development of analysis-based design methods and associated system reliability analysis. He also leads projects related to full-range behaviour of connections including fracture analysis and buckling-induced morphing of structural elements. Kim Rasmussen is chair or member of numerous national and international standards committees related to Steel Structures, Stainless Steel Structures, Aluminium Structures, Scaffolding Structures and Steel Storage Racks. He has undertaken numerous consultancies for industry and remains an active consultant advising on structural analysis, design and collapse.

Dan Dubina

Timisoara University of Technology, Timisoara, Romania

Dan Dubina is Full Professor of Steel Structures, member of Romanian Academy, President of Timisoara Branch of this academy, is the Director of Research Center of Mechanics of Materials and Structural Reliability-CEMSIG, at the “Politehnica” University of Timisoara. Former President of ECCS in 2005-2006 , member of Executive Board of ECCS and of ECCS Technical Committees TC7- Cold formed steel, TC8 - Stability,TC10 - Structural connections, and TC13 - Seismic resistant structures. These topics are in coincidence with his scientific domains in the research activity. Two times awarded with ECCS Steel Design Award, in 2003 and 2007, Professor Dan Dubina has published more than 500 scientific papers and has published, and , as Author or Editor, 50 books or chapters in books or volumes.
Related to the contribution to study of interactive buckling modes ,one notices that Professor Dan Dubina is the father of ECBL (Erosion of Critical Bifurcation Load) method ; also, together with Professor Jacques Rondal of Univesity of Liege and Professor Victor Gioncu , from Timisoara, too, they the initiators of the series of CIMS Conferences, which started with the 1st Edition in 10-12 october, 1992, in Timisoara.

Ben Young

Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

Professor Ben Young is currently the Vice President (Student Affairs) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, overseeing the institutional policies and plans related to Internationalization and student development as wel l as the establishment of partnership with leading universities and strategic partners in overseas countries. He was Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He was a professor of structural engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering, HKU. Professor Young is the Chairman of the Structural Division, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Professor Young is also an advisory member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) for the Committee on Structural Stainless Steel. In addition, he is a committee member of the SEI/ASCE-8 Specification for the “Design of Cold-formed Stainless Steel Structural Members”, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). His research interests include cold-formed steel structures, testing and design of steel structures, high strength steel structures, stainless steel structures, aluminium structures, structural stability, fire resistance of metal structures and engineering education. Professor Young is currently a Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research, ELSEVIER. He is also serving as a member of editorial boards for ten other journals, including the Journal of Thin-Walled Structures and Journal of Steel and Composite Structures. He has published over 550 international journal and conference papers, of which over 260 are SCI indexed journal papers. Professor Young received the Best Research Paper Award given by the Journal of Structures, ELSEVIER in 2016.

  • After the Conference a Special Issue of Thin-Walled Structures will be published, with 12 -15 post-conference papers, selected and invited by the members of the CIMS2020 Scientific Committee; the papers will be peer reviewed according to review procedure of Thin-Walled Structures
